“They’re
as quiet as a turkey on thanks giving.” Erik grumbled as he picked up a
luke-warm energy drink from his small stash and popped it open, taking a couple
large gulps then motioned the can to his friend. Both were lying stomach down
under some heavy brush. “Want some?”
Aiden pulled his
gaze away from the woods just long enough to give his friend a sidelong
brow-raise before settling back into his position, the leaves breaking under
him as he moved ever so slightly.
Erik
shrugged. “Just thinkin’ someday you might get wise.”
“Because drinking
something that tastes like fuzzed up and sugared down deer pee is what all the
smart people are doing these days.”
“And you wonder
why you don’t have a girl.”
Aiden rolled his
eyes. “Oh I know why I don’t have a girl. Because it comes down to girls or gas
and I’m choosing the one I only need to fill up once every couple of weeks.”
“Can you kiss
gas?” Erik asked smugly.
“No but you can
kiss my-“
“I see them!” Erik
hissed, putting his can aside and grabbing his scope, bringing it up to his
eye.
“How many?” Aiden
whispered, his tone all business as he wrapped his fingers around the stock of
his LSG.
“Three.”
“Only three?
Where’s the rest?”
“No idea. But from
the looks of it they don’t know where we are. You have a visual?”
“Yeah. Let me find
‘em in the glass.” He dropped his eye to his scope and a moment later he had
one of the group in his crosshairs. The small band was moving in short bursts,
ducking behind cover so as not to be an easy target. It was obvious they knew
Aiden’s general direction but he could tell that they hadn’t pin pointed him
yet. Where the other two were he had no idea. He needed to work fast.
“Ready?” Erik
said. Aiden could hear the adrenaline in his voice.
“Keep your pants
on man. You know I know what I’m doing.”
“Yea, yea. Just do
it already. My finger’s starting to twitch.”
“If
you didn’t drink the deer pee-“
“Oh
just shut up and do it!”
Aiden grinned then
took a deep breath and focused his sights on the leader of the group. He
waited. Right now his targets were hidden behind a fallen redwood, probably
getting ready for another dash. But to where?
“They’re about to
run. Where?”
Eric looked
scanned the possible locations for a moment before saying with confidence,
“Tall grass, thirty yards to their right. Once they get there we’ll loose ‘em.”
Aiden kept silent.
He had complete faith in Erik’s ability as a spotter, they both knew that. Now
it was up to him.
Two inches – no, better make it three for
reaction time. No wind. Hundred and fifty yards away. Adjust a little bit more
up and…perfect.
Then, like a
scared bunch of rabbits, the pray darted from behind the tree and Aiden pulled
the trigger, slammed the bolt back then forward, hardly readjusting his aim
before the second round was off. Pull up, cock back, slam forward and lock into
place. Small readjustment. Pull the trigger.
Three .3 mm bb’s
flew from his barrel, striking his targets dead on as they yelped and jumped
from the quick stings. Three hands went up, three heads went down and Erik
laughed, his voice echoing in the forest.
“That was just
sad.”
Aiden grinned. “Not
to shabby if I do say so myself. But where are the other tw-“
Like a pair of
screaming banshee the last two came screaming from Aiden’s flank, spraying orange
and yellow BB’s into the bush without remorse.
Maybe it was the
rush of adrenaline or just the energy drinks but Erik moved like a devil, his
M4 seeming to materialize in his hands, his body moving in perfect unison as he
pulled the trigger and his gun hissed plastic death. An instant later the two
would-be ambushers were staring at Erik with a kind of awed look in their eyes.
“This isn’t a game
for you guys is it?”
“No.” Erik and
Aiden said together.
